Let's keep it simple!
1. No harassment or abusive language-- this includes name-calling, threats, and abusive language that denigrates someone on the basis of race/ethnicity/gender identity/sexual orientation/ability. Please note that abusive language is forbidden IC and OOC. It's fine for your character to insult another character on the basis of his/her awkward personality/weird hat/ugly pet toad, but you may not use insults based on race/ethnicity/gender identity/sexual orientation/ability in your IC writing. This is in order to maintain a safe space for all users. If you observe harassment or abusive language, please let an admin know immediately.
2. We are a PG-13 RPG-- we allow limited profanity, non-graphic violence, mentions of alcohol/drug use and abuse, and kissing. In general, we ask you to make your decisions about content based on necessity. If you feel it is critical for your character to express him/herself in a pivotal moment by using profanity, that's your choice. What we ask you to avoid is gratuitous profanity (i.e., a character who just loves to swear regardless of the situation). Characters may drink alcohol, but be aware that any alcohol abuse by underage characters is liable to be punished by professors. Drug use/abuse may be mentioned, but not instructed, elaborated on, or glorified. There is no sex or nudity allowed on Statute of Secrecy. Non-graphic violence is fine, but please avoid any extended description of topics that may be sensitive for some users, such as sexual violence, self-harm, and abuse.
3. Think before you write-- use good etiquette. Don't god-mod (control or imply another character's actions in your post). Don't post inappropriately short or inappropriately long responses. If you are in a thread with many participants, try to give each character a chance to reply before posting a second time. If you are new to forum roleplaying, check out this link to learn more about how it works!
4. If in doubt, ask!-- do you want a character with a special ability? Want your character to set up a school-wide club, or get involved in a site-wide plot? Just contact an admin and ask!

The Basics Muggleborns run the world. Aided by their ability to blend in among actual Muggles, they have used magic to climb to some of the upper echelons of Muggle society and now control vast fortunes and the political systems of many countries. Purebloods seem like a backwater remnant of a bygone era.
History For the last decade the fortunes of Muggleborn witches and wizards have been on the rise, as Muggleborns have largely shunned the isolation of careers in the wizarding world to integrate among—and sometimes control—Muggles.
Many trace the phenomenon back to what was originally a small secret society at Hogwarts. First active in the '40s and '50s, the Mudblood Society was a fringe group of Muggleborn students who felt marginalized in the wizarding world and plotted their take-over of the Muggle world. The society was regarded as something of a joke by most of those who knew of it until the first head of the Mudblood Society, Nicholas Abney, was sent to Azkaban in the mid-60s for using the Imperius Curse to control much of the Muggle banking establishment in Britain. The resulting scandal cast the rest of the Society in a negative light, and Muggleborns quickly hushed up their connections to the group.
While the Mudblood Society continued to meet, the ensuing years saw an increasingly less serious contingent take over and the Mudblood Society focused more on hazing rituals and late-night pranks than world domination. It wasn’t until Harriet Burns took over the Society in 1976 that the tone changed. Harriet believed that Muggleborns were wasting their talents in the wizarding world when they could be ruling the Muggle world. All it took was Harriet’s charisma and vision for the Society to flourish, and most of the Muggleborns (and many halfbloods) from her class at Hogwarts pursued—and became highly successful in—Muggle careers. Harriet herself went on to a vibrant political career in London. To the vast surprise of the wizarding world, she married an American Muggle and stepped out of the public eye in 1988 in order to “raise a family in peace.”
In 1990, William Simmons, Harriet’s Muggle husband, was elected President of the United States.
The wizarding world was stunned—it seemed clear to everyone that Harriet Simmons alone was behind her husband’s meteoric rise from obscure House member to President. Purebloods complained vociferously that Harriet’s actions were a threat to the International Statute of Secrecy, and behind closed doors people whispered that surely it was a love potion, if not the Imperius Curse, that allowed Harriet to control William Simmons. Outspokenly triumphant, Harriet urged fellow Muggleborns to follow her example. One by one, former members of the Society rose to positions of wealth and prominence all over Great Britain.
Meanwhile purebloods grew increasingly marginalized, and the Ministry of Magic became a quaint relic of an earlier era. Confused and a bit unbalanced, most purebloods retreated to all-wizarding villages where they lived in relative obscurity. Over time the wealthy, powerful Muggleborns began to look down on the backwater purebloods, and by the mid-90s intermarriage between the two groups was increasingly rare.
At Hogwarts By the late '90s the Mudblood Society has stopped meeting, as its ideology is so prevalent among the Muggleborn and halfblood students of Hogwarts. Most Muggleborn and halfblood students aspire to be in Hufflepuff, the former house of Harriet Simmons and the house that has always been the most welcoming of Muggleborns. Gryffindor is also made up primarily of Muggleborns and halfbloods, while Ravenclaw is the most mixed. Slytherin is almost entirely pureblood, and is looked down upon by members of other houses. There is a growing sense of isolation and resentment among pureblooded students, although a fringe group has begun to advocate for purebloods to learn more about Muggles and Muggle society so as not to be left out of the emerging power structure.

Applications are now open! Please make your way to Student Applications, Professor Applications, or Plot Characters. How involved is your application? Not very! We ask that you have a basic sense of your character's personality and history, but we feel that characters naturally grow and change with time-- so you don't need to have everything figured out right away. How long does it take an application to be approved?Typically a day or two at most. My application was approved, now what?Feel free to start posting in the forums that are currently open, which include all of the Diagon Alley forums. The Hogwarts Express leaves on April 28th, 2016, at which point the Hogwarts Express forum will open. Term begins May 5th, 2016.

What is a "plot character?" At SoS we have a strong site-wide plot. That doesn't mean that everyone is obligated to participate in the site plot-- we welcome individual plots and character development-- but it does mean that certain characters are centrally involved in the long-term site plot. In order to find members who are interested in playing characters with a more intensive time commitment and/or involvement in the central plot, we have listed some of the major plot characters below.
If I play a plot character does that mean I have no control over what happens to him/her? No! We support individual character development and collaborative plotting. As you can see, many of the characters below are blank slates. Some have certain details filled in, but all are open to your own interpretation and development. Certain key characters may have roles that are more demanding than others, so please note the estimated time commitment and degree of character freedom listed below. In general, plot characters will be more appealing to players who enjoy plotting, teamwork, and frequent posting. That being said, any and all characters can be involved in the central plot to the degree that they wish-- if you have an idea for a plot direction, please contact an admin and we are extremely open to working with you.
Will more plot characters become available in the future? Yes! As the site plot evolves, so do the characters involved in the site plot. New characters will be introduced and recruited from this page periodically, so please check back!
So what types of plot characters are available now? 1. [Your choice of first name] Simmons-- daughter of Harriet Burns and William Simmons, 1st year, 11 years old Time commitment: daily/every other day posting Degree of freedom: routine participation in pre-determined/collaboratively-determined plot points and site events
2. [Your choice of first name] Abney-- niece(s)/nephew(s) of Nicholas Abney, any year, any age Time commitment: weekly posting Degree of freedom: occasional participation in pre-determined/collaboratively-determined plot points and site events
3. [Your choice of first name] Cooper-- daughters and sons of Angus Cooper, a Muggleborn British politican, and his Muggle wife, Celia Cooper Time commitment: weekly posting Degree of freedom: occasional participation in pre-determined/collaboratively-determined plot points and site events, scope will grow with time
4. [Your choice of first name] Blythe-- an old pureblood family, brothers and sisters of Alastair Blythe, daughters/sons of Callum and Jane Blythe, both Ministry of Magic workers Time commitment: weekly or biweekly posting Degree of freedom: at-will participation in pre-determined/collaboratively-determined plot points and site events, scope can grow with time
5. [Your choice of first and last name]-- professor-- any subject-- Muggleborn who supports Muggleborn advancement in the Muggle world, hardliner, friend of Harriet Simmons Time commitment: weekly or biweekly posting Degree of freedom: occasional participation in pre-determined/collaboratively-determined plot points and site events, scope will grow with time [/font]
How do I apply for a plot character? Please copy/paste the appropriate Student Application or Professor Application into a new thread within the Plot Characters board, and do your thing! Please note that student applications for plot characters are required to submit a brief sample role-play of your choice with the application.
